Mid 2020, we had the pleasure of celebrating the “undocking” of 2 of our most experienced team members of Engine Deck Repair.

Forty-five years ago, at age of 16, Jacques Lievens started his career in the Antwerp Drydocking scene as Apprentice, learning the job along the way. Around the end of the summer of 1976, only 2 months later, Marc Ruymaekers joined EDR as well, being the grandson of an experienced dockworker. At that time, parents preferred that their children would proceed to a university or obtain other specialized degrees. This was not different for Marc and Jacques. However, they were convinced that their future laid with Mercantile (the Owners of the drydock in that time) and history proved them right.

Jacques searched his career path towards Dockmaster, and Marc grew from apprentice to Mechanical Workshop Manager, both very impressive careers during which many changes happened. Various take overs led to uncertainties, but also creating opportunities.

It was when Engine Deck Repair (EDR) first appeared in the drydocking site of the Port of Antwerp that the change was there for the good. With new management and strong investment program came new challenges as well. “In the workshop we have seen the introduction of new equipment like Plasma Cutters and drawings are all made on the computer in stead by hand” Marc tells proudly. He continues “with the expansion of activities, new international employees arrived, bringing back more knowledge to the yard.”

“With new nationalities and new languages at the yard, the importance of clear communication on the job even increased” Jacques adds. “But it brings a lot of ambiance and good atmosphere as well!”

Both men are hardened workers in the Port of Antwerp and come from a legacy of dockers and workers in the Port area. As we waive off both Marc and Jacques for their retirement, we are happy to see that a new generation took over the watch. We say Farewell to many vessels leaving our Shipyard, but we say Goodbye to Marc and Jacques as we are certain to see them around!
